The Georgia Shorthorn Association was formed in 1996 by a dedicated group of breeders with the mission to assist, organize and promote the marketing of shorthorn cattle throughout the state of Georgia and the southeast. Our members participate in many sales in the southeast, including the Georgia Club Calf Sale at the Georgia Beef Expo and the Blue Ridge Classic Shorthorn Sale in Clemson, South Carolina.Georgia, known for magnolias, peanuts and peach blossoms, is also home to another kind of southern belle, some of the best Shorthorn cattle in America. Working together, the members of the Georgia Shorthorn Association dedicate our organization to preserving the rich history and advancing the bright future of the shorthorn breed. Whether in the pasture, feedlot or showring, Georgia shorthorns are winners. The Shorthorn breed of cattle originated in the 1600’s in Durham, The American Shorthorn Herd Book was the first to be published in this country for any breed in 1846, with the establishment of the American Shorthorn Association following in 1872. Today, over forty-five breeds of cattle trace their parentage to the shorthorn/polled shorthorn breed. These include Santa Gertrudis, Angus, Red Angus, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Beefmaster, Maine-Anjou and milking shorthorn. |
